MARYVILLE, Tenn (Sept. 27) When the checkered flag fell on the Southern All Star King of the Mountain event at Smoky Mountain Speedway Saturday night Billy was the King of the Mountain and Tommy came home third.
The two Blount Motorsports entries started side-by-side on the fifth row and with the green flag started to work their way to the front. By the 13th circuit of the 50-lap event Billy had moved into third. Two laps later he powered into second and after another four laps he moved under leader Skip Arp to take the lead. While Billy was moving through the field Tommy was not far behind.
“The car has been really drivable and all I had to do is take care of it,” said Billy with a grin. “The only time that I was worried all night was on those double file restarts. Once we got going and things got spread out where you could race everything was fine. We have had a good car at this track before, but didn’t have any good luck. Tonight was our night.”
“Billy and I started next to each other in the fifth row and we had the cars to run first and second,” commented Tommy. “When I got into third behind William (Thomas) we were running the same groove and I was running out of laps. If he didn’t make a mistake I would have had to rough him up to pass him. We have raced good and clean all year and I finished third.”
For Billy the win put him two points ahead of second place finisher Thomas for the series point lead. Tommy’s third place finish put him in third place in the point battle just four points ahead of David Payne.
