MARYVILLE, Tenn. (July 18) Billy scored back-to-back Southern All Star wins when he held off Ronnie Johnson at Boyd’s Speedway Friday night with teammate Tommy finishing 14th. He led all 50 laps to win the Jean Johnson Memorial at Cleveland Speedway on Saturday night. Tommy finished fourth.
It was a weekend of firsts for Billy. It was his first win since he began the 2011 season driving for the Blount Motorsports team, his career first win at Cleveland Speedway and his first Southern All Star win in over six years.
“It has taken us longer to get where we are than we thought it would, but we have had our share of mechanical problems and not much good luck at all. Every time we would get close to where we needed to be something would happen and set us back,” said Billy with a grin. “The car was good a couple of weeks ago at Smoky Mountain, but we were crashed out. This Friday and Saturday night it was real drivable and predictable and nothing happened to keep us out of the winners circle.
We have a good team. A good bunch of guys that work really hard and until this weekend had little to show for their efforts. Tommy ran good at Cleveland and with the way things are coming together hopefully the second half of the season will help us forget the first half.”
Billy and the BMS team look to continue their winning ways with a return trip to Cleveland Speedway for the Southern Nationals event on Thursday night. On Friday and Saturday nights they will continue with the Southern Nationals at Volunteer and Tazewell Speedways.
