MARYVILLE, Tenn. (Jan. 13) The ups and downs of dirt track racing often mimics a roller coaster ride and for Blount Motorsports that is exactly what it felt like during their 62-race season.
Ever year since BMS was established in 2006 they have won at least one championship or rookie of the year award and their share of features each year. The 2019 season was no exception as they won seven races, six for Donald and one for Tommy, a Fall Nationals Championship and the over all points championship for all three of Ray Cooks Schaeffer’s Oil Series.
“Donald coming back, a whole lot of flat tires and the ever changing landscape of dirt Late Model racing made for an interesting year,” said team owner Larry Garner. “We had some really good outings, lost and found our way toward the end of the season and our engine program with Vic Hill was excellent. We are excited about and are getting geared up for the new season.”
No matter whom you talked to on the team, two things kept cropping up. The first was all the flat tires many coming when Donald was running in contention for the win. The second was the great power and reliability that Vic Hill Racing Engines gave them all year long.
“Donald got settled in, Vic Hill’s engines were great, we continue to get better with the Rocket Chassis, finished strong and are ready for the new season,” said David Bryant. “We had a decent year and I would give it a C. There were plenty of ups and downs, but when you have over 10 flat tires you start thinking what might have been,”
“It was a strange year with a lot of inconsistency. We would win one night and take a provisional the next. All the flats made it even stranger,” said Donald. “David and I are working well together, our engine program is great and I can’t wait for the new 440 Vic is building for us.”
Six years ago Tommy Kerr began running a limited schedule and in each of those six years he has won at least one feature event. 2019 was no exception and he didn’t have a flat.
“When you race part time your are way behind before you start,” said Tommy. “We ran about half of what we normally do, didn’t do as well as we would have liked, but had a bunch of fun and won our annual feature.”
Blount Motorsports will start the season at East Bay Raceway Park running the Lucas Oil Series Winter Nationals on February 3 through February 8.
2019 Season Numbers, Donald: Events 49, Championships 2, Wins 6, Top 5s 20, Top 10s 13 – Tommy: Events 8, Wins 1, Top 5s 1, Top 10s 4
