TAZEWELL, Tenn. (July 25) Tommy Kerr driving the Blount Motorsports GW Performance Hoosier tire shod Rocket scored one win, six top five and nine top 10 finishes to win the Ray Cook’s 2009 Southern Nationals Championship.
The 2009 Southern Nationals held 10 races at 10 different race tracks in five states over a 12 day period. Kerr would make every event without taking a provisional starting position and never finished out of the top ten until the tenth race.
“We went to a number of race tracks that I had never seen before, but the crew gave me a good car every night out and we were able to win the championship,” said Kerr. Everyone at Blount Motorsports was on the same page and we able to make all the races and recorded some good finishes.”
Kerr knows that to win championships you have to be consistent and they were. But, he didn’t want to win the championship without winning a race and that was one of the reasons that the win at Volunteer Speedway was special.
“You have to be consistent to win championships, but you want to win races too. We won at Volunteer Speedway and that was special, not only because it won the championship, but because the quality of the field. When you take the checkered flag ahead of a stellar field that included Jimmy Owens, Chris Madden, Scott Bloomquist, Joe Armes Vic Hill, Billy Ogle, Ivadent Lloyd and a host of others you feel really good about it,” concluded Kerr.
Kerr and the BMS team will now concentrate on winning the 2009 Tennessee Thunder Series Championship as they have the point lead with seven races remaining.
