MARYVILLE, Tenn. (Sept. 9) Donald McIntosh set fast time, started on the pole and led every lap to win the 44-lap Schaeffer’s Oil Fall Nationals event at Tazewell Speedway Sunday evening. For McIntosh it was his first win at the third mile speed plant.
It looked like a perfect night with a great car as McIntosh set fast time and was cruising in the lead around the high-banked oval when the throttle started sticking in the corners.
“We had a really good car. It was the best one I have ever had here (Tazewell) and we were just cruising until the throttle started sticking,” said McIntosh. “With about 12 laps to go the throttle stuck and no more cruising. I had to drive the car totally different for the last 12 laps, but the results were the same.”
“The throttle was sticking in the corners and Donald did a great job keeping the car going and out of the wall,” said David Bryant. “He had to do so much braking to stay on the track that a tire blew out on the last lap. He was still able to bring it home in one piece and take the win.”
As good as the car was Sunday at Tazewell it was bad the previous night at Smoky Mountain.
“We just couldn’t get the handle on the car. Seemed like no matter what we did it was either wrong or not enough,” continued Bryant. “When a header tube broke we pulled it in and called it a night.”
Teammate Tommy Kerr was also a victim of the thrashing on McIntosh’s car.
“I totally missed a call on adjusting Tommy’s car. What I told him to do to the car would not work on the front end of his car. I basically gave him a car that was totally out. It wasn’t even close.” concluded Bryant.
