MARYVILLE, Tenn. (Jul 13) Donald and Tommy kicked off the Southern Nationals at Smoky Mountain on Friday night with Donald continuing the march at Wythe on Saturday night. It wasn’t the start of the 12 race series they wanted in the opener, but things picked up at Wythe Raceway.

On Friday it was a long night for both Donald and Tommy. Donald started 11th and finished 10th. Kerr made the race through the consi, started 19th and finished 11th.

“Donald’s car was terrible, Tommy’s wasn’t too bad, the crew chief was horrible and as you might imagine it was a long night,” said David. “Over adjusted Donald’s car and it was junk.”

“We started 11th and got as high as fifth when the car got really tight and back we went,” grimaced Donald. “The only good thing about the night was we didn’t tear anything up.”

“I just got behind the eight ball when I didn’t qualify well. After running the heat and the consi I found a rhythm,” said Tommy. “We ran good in the feature but when you start 19th you are in a deep deep hole.”

Saturday night at Wythe Raceway the car was better and everything went better. Donald started fourth fell back to eight and worked his way back up to finished fifth.

“We had a lot better race car so we qualified and ran better at Wythe,” said Donald. “We got a lot closer adjusting the car and were just a little bit off tonight.”

“The car, the crew chief and the driver were all better Saturday night,” said David. “Two down and 10 to go and we are close to being where we need to be.”

The next two Southern National events are at Volunteer Speedway tonight and I-75 Raceway on Tuesday night.
