MARYVILLE, Tenn. (Aug. 25) After a long dry spell Donald put the Blount Motorsports Rocket back in victory lane winning the Southern All Star Dirt Slinger Classic at I-75 Raceway Saturday night.
Donald who also set fast time had his hands full with pole sitter David Crabtree. Crabtree and McIntosh battled early, but Crabtree had a comfortable lead when he lost an engine and McIntosh took the point.
“I made some changes in the car during the week. Donald added some more and we had a pretty good car, but we had a lot of luck too,” said David. “There was something wrong with the rear end and the car wouldn’t back up before the race. Donald thought we’d run three laps and I told him we would make at least 10.”
With rain an hour or so before the race the track was really aggressive with lap times in the low to mid 11 seconds for the entire race on the 3/8s mile oval. Toward the end of the race they had a right rear going down and the car had tightened up, but they were the first to take the checkered.
“Man, the car was a lot better than it has been, but we were seriously lucky too. I like aggressive race tracks, the rear end held up, the right rear held enough air to finish and a couple of the other cars having problems all figured into the win,” grinned Donald. “We made some serious improvements on the car and have plans to test before the next race weekend as we want to have a strong fall to end the season.”
Between working on the cars and the rains from hurricane Laura over the weekend the teams next races will be over Labor Day Weekend at Smoky Mountain and Tazewell. They will kick off the Schaeffer’s Fall Nationals.
