MARYVILLE, Tenn. (Nov. 21) In his last race behind the wheel of the Blount Motorsports Ole Ben Franklin Motors Rocket Donald set fast time, finished second and won the Southern Nationals Bonus Series Championship at Boyd’s Speedway Saturday afternoon.

It was the third and last year of a successful pairing of Donald and Blount Motorsports. In the three years there were two Spring Nationals championships, this years SNBS championship as well as three overall points titles for Ray Cook’s series.

“Since we put together Blount Motorsports in 2006 all three of our drivers, Tommy Kerr, Billy Ogle Jr. and Donald have won championships. They have been a credit to our sponsors, our fans and our team,” said Larry. “Donald did a good job for us and we feel like both he and Blount Motorsports have grown in the three years he has been here.

We hate to see him leave, but understand his decision and wish him success in all his future endeavors.”

“It was an emotional day for sure. We have spent a lot of time together over the last three years and leaving the team is like leaving family,” said Donald, “Sad about leaving, but excited about what is coming up. I have wanted to run a touring series since I started racing Late Models and we are going to take a shot at the Lucas Oil Series in 2018.

I want to thank Larry Garner, David Bryant, Tommy Kerr and everyone at Blount Motorsports. It was a great experience and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

David Bryant, who has been the crew chief for all three drivers, is turning the page and ready to start chapter four with Casey Roberts.

“I really thought we were going to win the race, but Overton took a gamble on tires and it paid off,” said David. “Donald did a good job like he has done for us the whole time he has been here. At the beginning of the year we set our goals and the only one we didn’t realize was winning the Spring Nationals. Donald is a good racer and I wish him a lot of luck with the Lucas deal.”

The Iron-Man Leftover 50 at 411 Motor Speedway Saturday afternoon will be the start of what everyone hopes to be a long and winning relationship with Casey Roberts behind the wheel. Drivers’ meeting for Saturday’s race is 2 PM.
