MARYVILLE, Tenn. (July 31) With four seconds in seven top five finishes during this years eight Southern Nationals Series races, Billy and the Blount Motorsports team came away with a runner up finish in the point battle.
“Two many seconds. Sure second place finishes are better than the alternative, but they are not worth much when the reason you are second is because you gave away the win,” said Larry Garner. “We know we can’t win them all and don’t expect to but there were three Southern National races we could have and should have won, but didn’t.”
The team went into the Southern Nationals with a new Rocket Chassis, a new Vic Hill engine program and everything ready to go. And although their race and final point results were better than last year’s Southern Nationals there wasn’t a lot of celebration.
“We enjoyed the series and the competition again this year. We know that we have as good or better race cars and equipment than our competitors,” said David Bryant. “The crew will keep putting a car capable of winning out there. Now it is up to the driver to pick up his game.”
Billy agrees that the car and engine package is the best they have had. “ The new Rocket is great and the Vic Hill engines have plenty of power and are really smooth. We have a really good car and I think we are right there. But in order for the program to get out of second and into victory lane I need to step up and do my job better. I need to be better both in qualifying and in the race.”
Last year after completing the Southern Nationals the team got hot. At one point they won five in a row with the Lucas Oil Scorcher at Volunteer Speedway being the third race of the streak. This year’s combination of a good race car and a motivated driver should bode well for the remainder of the season.
The next event for the team is the Southern All Star race at Volunteer Speedway on Saturday August 3.
