MARYVILLE, Tenn. (June 17) Donald had a good start and a not so good finish in the Lucas Oil Mountain Moonshine run at Smoky Mountain Speedway Saturday night. Driving the backup car that hadn’t been run since East Bay he started fifth in his heat, moved up two positions when two of the cars in front of him took themselves out and finished second in the heat. He started seventh on the grid and finished fourteenth in the feature.
“The car wasn’t that good and it wasn’t that bad, but when you are racing with these guys, the Lucas Oil regulars, you have to be really good or you are going to finish 14th like we did tonight,” said Donald. “We really need some help. Right now Dave (Bryant) and I are doing all the stuff you need to do to just get the car on the track. We don’t have time to put our heads together and think about how to make the car better. How to make the car faster.”
Tommy, who was racing in his third race of the season, won the first B-Main and started the race 17th. He would struggle finding any kind of rhythm and post a disappointing 22nd place finish.
“We made the race and there were a lot of good cars that didn’t so that’s something I guess. Plus we started back where you tear stuff up and we didn’t tear anything up,” said Tommy shaking his head. “We run a limited schedule and with this virus business it has been even more limited. We had fun, we got to race and the car is in one piece. Considering everything it sounds like a good night to me.”
Jumping from the frying pan into the fire as Donald and the BMS team will head for the WoO double header at Volunteer Speedway. This Friday and Saturday night there will be two $10,000 to win events at the 4/10s mile high-banked oval.
