MARYVILLE, Tenn. (Feb. 24) The Blount Motorsports team was upbeat when they headed to Florida for the DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park. The little they were able to run in Georgia the previous week was positive and they were anxious to test their mettle against the best Dirt Late Model racing has to offer. But an engine eating race track turned six days of racing into five days of thrashing.

“The track required all the horsepower you could find and we lost our 450ci engine on the second night. We had additional engine problems and ended up making three engine changes. The bottom line was we didn’t have a truck full of 450 engines,” said Larry Garner shaking his head. “We had ponies at a horse race. If we had had the horses I think we would have been all right.”

Billy Ogle Jr. made the feature the first night, but lost the 450 engine before hot laps on the second night. Tommy Kerr made the race the second night and that was the end of feature racing for the team.

“There were a lot of good teams that were having as many problems as we were and some that never made a race, but that is not much consolation,” said Tommy. “Although we didn’t do well we learned a lot and worked well together as a team. Hopefully what we went through and what we learned in Florida will get our season off to a fast start here at home.”

The next scheduled races with both cars in action will be the back-to-back Southern All Star races at Boyd’s Speedway on March 11 and Cleveland Speedway on March 12. The Friday night event at Boyd’s pays $5,000 to win and the 16th Annual Shamrock at Cleveland pays $10,000 to win.
