MARYVILLE, Tenn. (July 30) After a great start in the Summer Nationals Donald and the Blount Motorsports Team hit a rough spot in Georgia. Between mechanical problems and being in the wrong place at the wrong time they dropped from leading the points to third with three races remaining in the 10 race series.
At Swainsboro after setting a new track record in qualifying they broke a rocker arm on the third lap of the feature and ended up finishing fourth. The next night at Screven they didn’t qualify well, broke a drive flange, took a provisional and ended up 16th. Rome was rained out. A bad qualifying set up put them mid pack at Boyd’s and they were caught up in a chain reaction wreck that took the nose piece off in the feature. They finished 13th.
“We probably shouldn’t be, but we are trying a lot of stuff. No fault of our own we are behind in a number of areas. The only way you are going to get better is to try stuff and sometimes that will bite you,” said David with a grimace. “Then when you throw in a couple of mechanical failures and problems things can and did get kind of ugly.
This is racing and these things happen. If you could control everything and everything went according to plan then everyone would be doing it.”
The next three nights, Tri-County Race Track tonight, Smoky Mountain on Friday night and Tazewell on Saturday will close out the series.
“I doubt we can pull a rabbit out of our hat in the final three races to win the championship like we did in the Spring Nationals, but hey this is racing and strange things can and do happen,” concluded Davis.
