MARYVILLE, Tenn. (Jun 1) The Old Man Garage Spring Nationals started in 2014 and in it’s three year existence, two drivers Billy Ogle Jr. and Donald McIntosh and one team, Blount Motorsports have won all three championships.
Compared to last years OMG Spring Nationals Championship run that featured two wins in the last three races to over take Billy Ogle Jr. and win the championship at Rome Speedway, made this year’s championship run that featured five top five and four top 10 finishes and a 92 point lead over David Payne seem almost mundane.
“Our goal this year is to win the Spring Nationals, the Summer Nationals and the Southern National Bonus Race Championships. Although we didn’t win the championship in spectacular fashion like last year, we did win it and accomplished our first goal of the season,” said Donald in the pits at Tri-County Monday night. “You never really know what the next race will bring. Friday night at Boyd’s we were good, Saturday night at Dixie good but had problems and Sunday night at Rome we were pretty bad.
I watched Scott Bloomquist during Speedweeks this year. With the same car, at the same race track, he won one night and didn’t make the race the next night. Its not an easy deal.”
Consistency wins championships and in the nine races that made up this year’s OMG Spring Nationals Blount Motorsports was the most consistent.
“After winning the first two Spring Nationals Championships we knew what to expect and what we needed to do to win the third,” said David. “I really don’t like to points race. However, when you are racing for these smaller purses, although Ray (Cook) has been getting them better, at the end of the year you need that championship money to come out.”
