MARYVILLE, Tenn. (Apr. 26) Saturday night Donald scored a fifth place finish in the Spring Nationals event at Senoia Raceway and teammate Tommy had a fifth place finish in the Southern All Star event at Smoky Mountain Speedway.
With Senoia Raceway rescheduling the rained out Spring Nationals race for the same night as the SAS was racing at Smoky Mountain, Blount Motorsports decided to split the team for the night.
Donald, David and B.J. loaded up and headed to Senoia Raceway. Donald started eighth and after a spirited battle for fourth place with Brandon Overton ended up with a fifth place finish.
“We were not horrible, but we were not all that wonderful either,” said David Bryant. “The car and the driver were good, but with these slick race tracks you really need to be one of the top qualifiers and that wasn’t us Saturday night.”
Tommy called a bunch of his buddies, loaded the car on an open trailer, hooked it to a ton truck, threw a cardboard box of tools in the back and headed to Smoky Mountain. He knew he was in trouble for qualifying as he was the first out in the second group and the track was getting faster.
“It was retro racing. It has been awhile since we towed an open trailer with a pick up crew to the track. It was like we had dropped back 20 years or something and we had a ball,” said Tommy with a big grin. “With the track getting better as qualifying went on I knew there were going to be a lot of cars qualifying ahead of us. We ended up starting 10th, had a couple of good races, passed a few cars and finished fifth with a whole race car.”
Blount Motorsports will head north to Ponderosa and Florence Speedways Friday and Saturday night for back-to-back Spring Nationals events in the Bluegrass State.
